Review: Space Opera

Space Opera Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This has been the hardest book for me to get through this year. I gave it 3 stars in the end which means that I found it good. I was entertained and although I had to keep several breaks during reading it was a nice read. I should probably say that my reading experience is rated 3 stars. The book deserves more probably. The thing is it was way over my head in terms of language. I'm not a native speaker of English (although most of the time I read native English sci-fi and fantasy genre fiction without any difficulty) and this novel is full of really long, really poetic use of mind-flow-like writing. Some of the time I got it, but I'm afraid, most often than not I didn't. It happened to me before with the author's other novel, Deathless. It really should have been a sign :D

Still, I recommend it to any native speaking, Douglas Adams loving (even the author says the Hitchiker's Guide to be the main muse for this one) and maybe poetry-liking readers. Don't miss this one, because the language is absolutely beautiful (as far as I can tell).
