Review: Deathless

Deathless Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Well, I have to state, this is not at all a bad book. It's just really not for me. I've never abandonded a book I started, but this was ther first tim I seriously considered it as an option. The story is very well formed, multi layered retelling of the nightmares of the 2nd World War through retelling different slavic myths. It's a great idea and the execution is exceptional also. It's just not for me at all. I thought it would be some dark fantasy like story with mythical themes, so I would learn about slavic myths as well as the long siege of Leningrad. Well, it sort of is, but it's a fairy tale first and foremost. A fairy tale for children or even so (even if it may sound sexist) young girls. The language is beautiful, there are a lot of chapters that could even be considered poetry. A beautiful piece of writing altogether. But it's a tale, or at least it seemed to me as such. I could never, not for a moment, believe anything that is happening. All the characters served a purpose rather than being real, existing "people". The form of most chapters also very similar to tales. Repetition (always 3 times), clear metaphors for what is good and evil and the lot. (view spoiler)
