Review: Binti

I was reading a lot about this one before I finally decided to give it a chance. All the hype and the awards may have moved my expectations too high, but I have to admit, that I didn't really like the story until like the 2/3 of it. It was really-really PC, I mean there is a strong, black, female character from Africa, with tribal backgrounds in a science fiction story. The author made a real effort to teach us a few things about the customs and culture of this specific tribe, but I found it to be a little bit too much, I mean the story and world-building suffered for the sake of it. Anyways I really liked the universe the story is set in. Especially the huge bio-engineered fish that serve as spaceships and all the other little details that made it alive and believable. And from the 2/3 point of the story, where other characters appear, basically for the first time, it was really exciting, and at the end, I pre-ordered the next part immediately. So, if you are struggling with this one like I did in the beginning, I advise you to hold on :D

The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris My rating: 5 of 5 stars I've read this book like 3 times when I was a teenager, but apart from the main plot I only remembered that I loved it very much. I think I didn't even know at that time that this was the part of a series. Now though I intend to read the whole series in the "correct" order so after finishing Red Dragon, I re-read Silence of the Lambs as well. Even though some memories came back during reading it was still a very exciting and enjoyable experience. Thriller and horror and not my main go-to genre, but I think Hannibal Lecter is one of the best villains of all time. I totally recommend it to anyone, even if not having read Red Dragon.
